Top Fantasy Baseball Prospects By Position w/ Printable Cheat Sheet

Prospects play a major roll in any dynasty league. Whether your goal is to load up on them for potential future dominance or go with more of a win-now approach, building a solid core of prospects is key to any dynasty team. Over the last few months, I’ve covered fantasy baseball prospects until I was blue in the face, discussing them from many different angles. One of those angles was breaking them down by position, which is what brings us together today.

Dearly beloved, we’re gathered here today to talk about how to approach prospects at different positions and to give you a neat little printable cheat sheet to bring with you to your draft, to work, to the in-laws, wherever. While all dynasty leagues have differently sized prospect rosters, here’s roughly how I like to approach it:

  • Catcher: 5%
  • Corner Infielders: 15%
  • Middle Infielders: 25%
  • Outfielders: 25%
  • Pitchers: 30%

As you can see, 50% of that is allotted to middle infielders and outfielders. Shortstop and outfield are annually the two deepest positions and usually offer the most fantasy upside all-around. With the depth at these positions, loading up is wise. I try and grab some elite studs at each position, some upside plays in the lower levels, and sprinkle in a few of those safe and boring prospects to provide some floor.

Wait, only 20% total to catcher and the corners? Do you hate those positions or something Eric? No, but there’s not nearly as much depth here, especially at catcher and first base. If I have 20 prospects, I’ll grab one catcher, one first baseman, and a couple of third basemen. Don’t go overboard where you don’t need to.

Keep in mind, these are just rough guidelines used to show the depth at each position. If value pops up at other positions, go with it.

Spring Training is in full effect! It’s time you got your fantasy baseball season started as well. Leagues are already forming at Fantrax.com, so head on over and get your league started today.
