New York Yankees Top 10 Prospects

Jasson Dominguez, OF AA

(85 GP, .219/.348/.369, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 25 SB)

The Martian has been calling double-A Somerset his home this season and has to this point underperformed. The number one prospect in the Yankees organization has massive upside with the raw power and plus speed on the base paths. In 85 games Dominguez has slashed .219/.348/.369 with 12 home runs and 25 stolen bases. What has stayed consistent for Dominguez has been the 16.5% walk rate this season. Dominguez has brought down his strikeout percentage throughout the season with it currently resting at 27.1%; still higher than you would prefer.

There is hope though as Dominguez has been notorious as a slower bat to get going and catches fire when the summer comes around. It seems to be the case this season, as in the month of July Dominguez has caught fire, slashing .306/.375/.431 with two home runs, 9 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 17 games played. It seems each season we get an opportunity to buy into Jasson Dominguez and to me that window is closing fast for the tail end of the season.

Spencer Jones, OF A+

(76 GP, .272/.344/.485, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 22 SB)

Spencer Jones was the first-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2022 and right out of the gates he was destroying baseballs. With potential 70-grade raw power, Jones has shot up dynasty rankings since draft day. This season he has had some growing pains after a hot start to the season in High-A Hudson Valley. May and June were indications that Spencer Jones was in fact human as he hit .253 with a .299 OBP in May and hit .245 with a .336 OBP in June.

Whatever affected Jones quickly passed as he has gone off in July, slashing .340/.456/.532 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, and four stolen bases in 13 games. Jones has limited the strikeouts to 12 in 47 at-bats in July; a massive improvement though his strikeout rate is still high at 30.3 percent for the season. For dynasty purposes, Spencer Jones is an impact bat that I suspect could be in the Major Leagues by the end of the 2024 season if he gets promoted to Double-A Somerset before the year is finished.

Austin Wells, C AAA

(66 GP, .234/.325/.434, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 5 SB)

As far as catching prospects are concerned, some dynasty managers just avoid the big names as the production rarely matches the hype. Over the last couple of seasons, we have seen the “Age of the Catcher” come into the forefront of our minds. Since he was drafted in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft by the Yankees, Austin Wells has been a top catching prospect in my eyes. With the exception of a five-game stint in Low-A this season, Wells has not had an OBP below .327 in his minor league career. In addition to the solid on-base numbers, Wells has had double-digit home runs and stolen bases every season leading up to 2023.

So far he looks on track to do the same this year as he has hit 12 home runs and swiped five bases so far in 66 games. Prior to his promotion to Triple-A, Wells had an 11% walk rate and a 22% strikeout rate in Double-A Somerset, continuing to show a solid eye at the plate. Once in the majors I project Austin Wells as a 25-30 home run bat with solid OBP numbers north of .350, and he will pitch in the 5-10 stolen base numbers JT Realmuto has been able to do in years past.

Everson Pereira, OF AAA

(59 GP, .306/.373/.566, 14 HR, 48 RBI, 7 SB)

The Yankees have not been short of big power bats in the minor leagues this season and one that is knocking at the door right now is Everson Pereira. Pereira has slugged 14 home runs with 13 doubles between Somerset and Scranton. This will make the third year in a row that Pereira has hit double-digit home runs in the minor leagues and he looks on pace to eclipse his career high of 20 by a comfortable margin. The exit velocities for Pereira have been off the charts and prior to writing this article, Pereira crushed a homerun against Worcester that went 455 ft and was 106 MPH off the bat. Pereira looks to be a solid 20-25 plus home run bat at the major league level who will get on base and pitch in a few stolen bases early in his career.

Oswald Peraza, 2B/3B/SS MLB

(45 GP, .261/.352/.495, 12 HR, 28 RBI, 11 SB)

There is no doubt the 2023 season has not gone the way most dynasty managers stashing Oswald Peraza would have hoped for. Peraza has bounced back and forth from Scranton to the majors when the need has arisen for the Bronx Bombers. With this being said, I believe he just needs the opportunity for everyday at-bats to become a fixture in the Yankees lineup. In 45 games played in Scranton, Peraza has been solid, walking 9.3% of the time while only striking out 18.1%. With double-digit power and speed already on full display in Scranton, Peraza could be a solid compliment to Anthony Volpe in the Yankees lineup.

In fact, Peraza has been affected by a low BABIP this season indicating he is better than his numbers suggest. The Yankees are trying to claw their way back up the standings so regular at-bats might be hard to come by for Peraza. Regardless, this might still be a prime opportunity to buy in for a solid 20 home run, 20 stolen base threat with the Yankees, or potentially with another club after the trade deadline.

Drew Thorpe, RHP A+

(16 GS, 99.1 IP, 124 K, .198 AVG, 2.08 ERA)

Far and away the best pitching prospect in the Yankees organization right now to me is Drew Thorpe. Selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB draft, Thorpe has excelled in High-A Hudson Valley this season with an 11.23 K/9 across 16 starts for the Renegades. Thorpe works primarily off of his fastball, slider, and change-up, with the slider and change-up working as plus offerings inducing solid swing and miss. The walks per nine has been stable at 2.81 showing an advanced command and control as well as keeping the ball in the ballpark to a 0.54 HR/9. More than likely the Yankees should promote Thorpe to Double-A Somerset by season’s end making it possible for him to make his debut late in 2024.

Clayton Beeter, RHP AAA

(15 GS, 80 IP, 96 K, .203, 2.36 ERA)

One of the largest “upside” arms in the Yankees organization has to be Clayton Beeter, a 24-year-old right-hander who has been a strikeout machine over his first three seasons. Beeter has averaged a 12.92 K/9 since being drafted by the Dodgers 66th overall in 2020. With three plus pitches in the high 90’s fastball, sweeping slider, and knee-buckling curveball, it’s no surprise the strikeouts have jumped as well as the walks. If there has been a flaw to Beeter’s game it has been the walks per nine. This season Beeter has a 4.66 BB/9 and it remains a question to me as to whether or not Beeter will remain a starter long term. To this point the Yankees have stuck with Beeter as a starter and if he continues to show the high strikeout upside could be a solid SP-2 long term.

Trey Sweeney, SS AA

(83GP, .253/.370/.430, 12 HR, 47 RBI, 13 SB)

Another one of the Yankee’s first-round draft picks has been performing well and rising steadily up the rankings. Trey Sweeney was one of my favorite “safe” draft picks during the 2021 MLB draft and despite the pedestrian surface numbers this season in Double-A Somerset, there is a lot to like here. Sweeney has continued to show excellent plate discipline and bat-to-ball skills, walking 14% of the time while dropping his strikeout rate to 18.9%.

The main concern for me out of the draft was if Sweeney would get to average power and so far he has exceeded expectations with back-to-back seasons of double-digit home runs and stolen bases. Do not let the .253 average deceive you. Sweeney caught fire in July, slashing .290/.421/.419 in 16 games. This hot streak could be closing the door on a potential buy-low opportunity for a player that I went on the record as saying was a DJ LeMahieu clone with speed.

Roderick Arias, SS CPX

(27 GP, .267/.423/.505, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 17 SB)

With Jasson Domingez taking most of the international spotlight, in a way Roderick Arias has flown under the radar. This season he has played exclusively in the Yankees complex league. In 27 games, Arias is slashing .267/.423/.505 with six home runs, 32 runs scored, 26 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases in 23 attempts. Along with the solid counting stats, Arias has been impressive at the plate walking 20.8% while only striking out 22.3% of the time. It has been impressive seeing the 18-year-old switch hitter getting to the plus power and speed in a controlled environment but it will be interesting to see how he fairs once he makes his debut in Low-A.

George Lombard Jr, SS/3B Rookie

The Yankees selected George Lombard Jr. out of high school in the first round of the 2023 MLB draft. Lombard Jr. is the son of a former MLB player and has a solid 6’3” build at shortstop, showing a potential five-tool skill set. In his senior season at Gulliver Prep School, Lombard Jr hit .478 with 14 doubles, six home runs, and 22 RBIs in 29 games played. Personally, I believe he will move off of shortstop to the hot corner where the plus arm should help him stick.
