Top 30 Los Angeles Angels Prospects to Target in 2024 Dynasty Leagues

Our 2024 Organizational Prospect Rankings are heading out west (AL West). First up will be the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, an organization that ranks at the bottom of the league in farm system and depth. There are only five Angels prospects currently in the Top 400 FantraxHQ Prospect Rankings. With that being said, there might be some risers in the next update. Let us dive into the top 30 Los Angeles Angels prospects and find some gems to stash for dynasty leagues.

Top 10 Angels Prospects

Nolan Schanuel, 1B

(29 GP, .275/.402/.330, 1 HR, 19 R, 6 RBI- MLB)

The first prospect to make it to the majors in the 2023 MLB draft was Nolan Schanuel. Before the draft, I was throwing out Vinnie Pasquantino comps on Nolan Schanuel and I still see that going forward. Schanuel slashed .275/.402/.330 in 29 games played in the majors with one home run, 19 runs scored, and six RBIs. Schanuel is a hit-over-power prospect who could get to 20 home run pop but the high contact percentages and OBP rates are what you are targeting here. Schanuel might not be a top 10 dynasty first base prospect long term but still a solid piece to build your dynasty off of.

Nelson Rada, OF

(115 GP, .276/.396/.346, 2 HR, 94 R, 48 RBI, 55 SB)

One of the major risers up the rankings for the Angels in 2023 was Nelson Rada. The now 18-year-old prospect spent the entire season in Low-A where he slashed .276/.395/.346 with two home runs, 94 runs scored, 48 RBIs, and stole 55 bases in 115 games played. Rada shows a solid plate approach walking 13.5% while only striking out 18.1% of the time.

For dynasty purposes, Nelson Rada is an interesting prospect to stash or acquire this offseason. Standing at 5’10” Rada will continue to fill out as he matures, potentially getting to average power between 10-15 home runs. The speed should remain solid and Rada can be counted on 25-30 stolen base potential once he reaches the major leagues. The question will be how he adjusts to off-speed pitching when he climbs the organizational ladder. Nelson Rada should start the 2024 season in High-A.

Ben Joyce, RHP

(GP, 10 IP, 10 K, 9.0 K/9, 1.800 WHIP, 5.40 ERA- MLB)

Tell the truth, you probably are still watching the filthy stuff Ben Joyce was throwing as a member of the Tennessee Volunteers. Maybe it’s just me but a reliever coming out of the draft throwing 101 mph was something to be excited about. The Angels were aggressive moving Ben Joyce up their system in haste. Across 17.2 innings pitched Joyce struck out 26 batters good for a 13.2 K/9 with a not-so-savory 4.08 ERA in 16 appearances. This was enough to get the call to the majors in 2023.

This seems like the future closer for the Angels if he can control where the fastball is going and add some velocity to his low-80s slider to bridge the gap between the two pitches. If Joyce is able to do so look out this could be fun.

Joswa Lugo, SS

(Signed In 24’ International Class)

This a power-over hit profile for Joswa Lugo. The above-average raw power makes him interesting but the hit tool is going to be the make-or-break tool that will need to improve. Already 6’2” and 175 pounds Joswa Lugo will more than likely move off the shortstop position long-term moving to either third base or one of the corner outfield positions where the power and arm strength might be better suited.

Kyren Paris, SS/2B

(113 GP, .255/.393/.417, 14 HR, 79 R, 45 RBI, 44 SB)

The Angels called Kyren Paris to the major leagues in 2023 and struggled in a small 15-game sample size. Paris skipped Triple-A Salt Lake and played the entire season in Double-A Rocket City. While with the Trash Pandas Paris slashed .255/.393/.417 with 14 home runs, 79 runs scored, and stole 44 bases in 113 games played. Paris can draw walks as he had a 17.1% walk rate prior to the call-up but has struggled with the strikeouts at 29.4% in Triple-A in 2023.

Kyren Paris still has work to do and I would not be surprised to see him starting the season in Triple-A Salt Lake. The recent increase of power with Kyren Paris is interesting paired with the plus speed makes him an interesting prospect to stash in deeper dynasty leagues. The strikeouts are what will determine if he will stick in the major leagues when given another opportunity.

Jadiel Sanchez, OF

(105 GP, .297/.378/.475, 11 HR, 59 R, 66 RBI, 7 SB)

In Jadiel Sanchez’s first full season in the Angels organization, he put together solid numbers. The 22-year-old outfielder slashed .297/.378/.475 with 11 home runs, 66 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 105 games played at Low-A. Sanchez has a patient approach at the plate walking 10.6% while only striking out 14.4% in 443 plate appearances.

For dynasty purposes, Jadiel Sanchez has an upside though it’s concerning that he is 22 years old and still in Low-A. The results should warrant him starting the season in High-A where he could move quickly with a good start. This profiles as a fourth outfield prospect for me who could provide solid OBP and average on an off day.

Anthony Scull, OF

(48 GP, .300/.377/.453, 3 HR, 31 R, 30 RBI, 10 SB)

The Angels had Anthony Scull play his entire 2023 season in the complex league. In 48 games, Scull slashed .300/.377/.453 with 3 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases. The 19-year-old had a 6.3% walk percentage while striking out just 21.4% of the time. For dynasty leagues, it’s hard to say what Scull could do to this point with a full season at Low-A as the competition in the complex league isn’t necessarily the best. So this could be an inexpensive flyer prospect in deep dynasty leagues to stash but I’ll have to wait and see how he will fair in 2024 to get a grasp on the long-term value.

Jorge Ruiz, OF

(73 GP, .304/.379/.419, 3 HR, 49 R, 52 RBI, 13 SB)

The Angels prospects in the lower levels of the farm system seem to be where the upside talent currently is and Jorge Ruiz plays right into that. The 19-year-old outfielder played the entire season in Low-A with the 66ers. In 73 games, Ruiz slashed .304/.379/.419 with three home runs, 52 RBIs, and stole 13 bases. The plate discipline was solid as Ruiz walked 8.2% while striking out just 15.8% of the time.

Standing at 5’10” and weighing just 164 pounds at 19 there is still room for power gains for Ruiz. The speed should be between 10-20 as he continues to move up the organizational ladder. The bat is what has stood out to this point and if he does well against advanced pitching in High-A and up we could see him move up the rankings just as fast.

Felix Morrobel, SS

(42 GP, .286/.322/.335, 21 R, 20 RBI, 11 SB)

Standing out in to Dominican Summer League in 2023 was Felix Morrobel. The 17-year-old shortstop stands 6’0” and 175 pounds and displayed a good feel for hitting. In 42 games played Morrobel slashed .286/.322/.335 with 21 runs scored 20 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases across 171 plate appearances. Morrobel drew just 4.7% walks in 2023 but managed to strike out just 7.6% of the time in the DSL.

The early returns for Morrobel look promising as an advanced bat at such a young age. There should be more power as Morrobel continues to fill out and wouldn’t surprise me if we see 5-10 next season in Low-A. This could be a solid infield prospect to stash in deeper dynasty leagues but keep an eye out on Morrobel in 2024 to see how the power and speed progress.

Caden Dana, RHP

(14 GS, 68.1 IP, 89 K 11.7 K/9, 1.185 WHIP, 3.56 ERA)

The Angels haven’t had much success developing pitchers with only a few panning out over the last four to five seasons. Caden Dana might be one to keep an eye on though as he continues to rise up the levels of the minor leagues. Dana ascended two levels in 2023 starting in Low-A where in three starts he struck out 18 batters in 15 innings pitched (10.80 K/9) with a .120 average against and had a 1.20 ERA prior to the call-up. Once called up to High-A Tri-City Dana struck out 71 batters in 53.1 innings pitched (11.98 K/9) with a .227 average against and finished with a 4.22 ERA and a 3.23 FIP across 11 starts.

The walks can be a bit high for Dana as he had a 3.60 BB/9 in Low-A and 4.05 BB/9 in High-A though it’s not too bad for the league he pitches in. Dana gets his success from a plus slider and average curveball which would explain the dominant strikeout rates in the lower levels. For Dana to continue to progress he will need to work on the fastball and change-up to remain a starter as he ascends to the major leagues.
