Draft Premier League: The Stacking Strategy

Stacking is a strategy to consider throughout the Draft Premier League season to give yourself a risky edge against your opponent. While it is a risk, this article will help you plan accordingly when you choose to “stack”. Personally I have seen this strategy work plenty of times, but also fail miserably. Taking a risk like this could lead to a huge score one week and a push towards your title!

What is Stacking?

Stacking is when you roster usually in your XI two or more players from the same team. These players could usually “link up” in some sort of way. Example a mid and a forward combining for attacking returns throughout the season. The other way is investing in defenders and a goalie from the same team and hoping for multiple clean sheets from a certain match. Example: owning both Boly and Doherty and starting them most games. Stacking can be a key to making a push at your league title if done right. When stacking I recommend targeting teams that you think will either score lots of goals or keep clean sheets. I wouldn’t recommend stacking Sheffield United’s attackers, but having 2-3 defenders from that squad could prove valuable.

Stacking During The Draft

During a draft, the obvious strategy is to target the best available players for each position when it is your turn. Stacking during the draft could be a different strategy to pay off. This may involve reaching on certain players and letting others fall past you in a draft. An example could be if you have pick #9 and take Son Heung Min in round 1. Round 2 comes along and both Harry Kane and Hakim Ziyech are available. While you may value Ziyech higher than Kane, pairing Kane with Son could provide your team with more value, allowing you to win more games. Near the end of the draft, I would recommend stacking a few rotational or lesser-known players from teams with good defensive/offensive records. An example could be drafting Tierney in round 9 and then Mustafi in round 13 hoping Arsenal start the season strong defensively.

Stacking From The FA Pool Defensively

After the draft, especially in a deeper league the FA pool usually isn’t very appealing. Using the stacking tactic especially with defenders could be a trick to winning some matches. I would look to target 2-3 defenders from teams that play low scoring teams, in the opening weeks I would target teams playing the likes of: West Brom, Sheffield United, and Fulham. Clean sheets are hard to come by regardless, so risking your defense against a team that at most may score one goal is a good bet. As well if you own an attacker from a certain team stacking a combination of a fullback with a striker isn’t a bad idea. Example: in a friendly match starting both Bertrand and Ings could lead to a goal and assist combination. Of course, this isn’t a strategy to live by if you drafted a strong defense.

Stacking From The FA Pool Offensively

Usually, the free-agent pool won’t have a top-end forward or midfielder lying around. Even in a tempting matchup, it may not be the best idea to play strikers who get no ghost points and haven’t scored much that season. I would avoid stacking multiple attackers from the free-agent pool. However, if you own a few attackers from a certain team; for example Pogba and Martial from United, it may be worth picking up a third attacker if available in a friendly match. Let’s say Fred is on the team sheet against Fulham, while he may not score there is the possibility he links up quite often with Pogba and Martial. You could get plenty of KP —> SOT combinations leading to four points each.
