Top DSL Batters

Angel Diaz, C/1B LAD

(39 GP, .353/.457/.586, 7 HR, 33 RBI, 2 SB)

Dodger’s player development continues to impress with the level of talent that goes in and out of the organization. Angel Diaz is proving to be an intriguing prospect to watch going forward. Currently in his second season in the DSL, Diaz is slashing .353/.457/.586.

If those numbers don’t pop off the page then take a look at his walk rate sitting at 14% and an even lower strikeout rate of 12.8%. In addition to the solid slash line, Diaz has put up counting stats as well, crushing seven home runs and 10 doubles in 164 plate appearances. Right now Diaz ranks fourth in batting average in the DSL at only 19 years old, The build is solid for a catcher or first baseman long-term as he is currently listed at 5’11” and 180 pounds. Definitely, a solid prospect to keep on your dynasty radars this off-season.

Jeffry Rosa, OF NYM

(43 GP, .273/.397/.657, 14 HR, 36 RBI, 1 SB)

Over the last decade, the New York Mets have done well with the international signing period, penning the likes of Francisco Alverez, Endy Rodriguez, Alex Ramirez, Ronny Mauricio, and others.  It seems there is a power bat that needs our attention now down in the DSL for the Mets and that’s Jeffry Rosa. Currently, Rosa is slashing .273/.397/.657 with a DSL-leading 14 home runs, 36 RBIs, and one stolen base in 176 plate appearances. Pair the big power with patience at the plate (9.1% BB%) and it’s not hard to get excited about Rosa. Right now Rosa stands 6’1” at 190 pounds and is only 18 years old. This leads me to believe there is still room on the frame and if the bat can continue to improve once he gets stateside this could be a plus power bat.

Demetrio Nadal, INF MIL

(39 GP, .322/.467/.496, 2 HR, 27 R, 17 RBI, 32 SB)

In dynasty leagues stolen bases are something everyone wants but reliable sources of steals are hard to come by. One of the next intriguing speedsters on the base paths looks to be Demetrio Nadal for the Milwaukee Brewers. The 18-year-old Nadal is currently tied for the league lead in stolen bases, swiping 32 in 41 attempts this year.

The rest of the stat line looks solid as well; right now Nadal is slashing .322/.467/.496 with two home runs, 27 runs scored and 17 RBIs in 39 games played. Nadal seems to be a prime candidate for a top-of-the-order lead-off hitter as he is patient at the plate (15.8% walk rate) and doesn’t get fooled often as the 11.8% strikeout rate shows us. Brewer’s player development has produced some gems here lately out of the international signing periods and Demetrio Nadal might be the next name to pop.

Kelvin Hldalgo, 3B/SS COL

(45 GP, .306/.399/.565, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 13 SB)

Colorado did very well in the last two international signing periods, getting some prospects I am sure will bounce up the rankings over the off-season. One of the intriguing bats they have is Kelvin Hldalgo a shortstop and third base prospect that has been impressive this season. Currently, Hldalgo is leading the DSL in RBIs with 52 and is second in home runs with 12. The slash line for Hldalgo is .306/.399/.565 with 12 HR, 52 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases in 45 games played. The plate discipline has really made Kelvin Hldalgo stand out to me as he is walking 12.7% of the time while only striking out 18.9% this season. This has the potential to be a true five-tool player with power and speed coming from a 6’2” frame and at only 18 years old there is a lot to dream about with Hldalgo.

Elias Medina, 3B/SS LAD

(43 GP, .322/.390/.568, 7 HR, 40 RBI, 16 SB)

With big-name international prospects like Josue De Paula and Joendry Vargas getting most of the attention in prospect circles, it’s easy to miss other prospects making waves in a stacked organization. Check out Elias Medina, a 5’10” shortstop who has played some third base as well in the DSL this season. Right now the 17-year-old is slashing .322/.390/.568 with seven home runs, 42 runs scored, 40 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases in 43 games. Impressive numbers but the 9.3% walk rate sticks out to me as a prospect working counts and able take a walk. Medina still has projection left on the body and could be a solid prospect going forward as he profiles as a plus power bat long-term.
