Rest of Season Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Acuna Matata

As I mentioned last week, I try not to go too crazy when it comes to making drastic changes in my weekly rest-of-season fantasy baseball rankings. Let’s look at Elly De La Cruz as an example. In his first seven games this year, he hit .250 with four runs, three RBI, no home runs, two stolen bases, and had a 14:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his last seven games, De La Cruz is hitting .391 with 11 runs, nine RBI, four homers, four steals, and a 5:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio. I ranked De La Cruz 36th overall before the season began. Guess where I have him in my ROS rankings this week? 36th.

Now I will admit, that I dropped him a few spots last week, and bumped him back up this week. But in general, you do not want to overreact in either direction based on small sample sizes. De La Cruz was not a bum a week ago, and he’s not 2023 Ronald Acuna this week. Speaking of Acuna, I should have known when I got the first pick in my two biggest money leagues that Acuna would turn back into a human being this year. He remains atop my ROS rankings. I am not in love with his early results. His strikeout rate is way higher than last year, and of course he has yet to hit a home run. But I expect him to figure it out in short order.

The season is still so fresh. There has been weird weather in many places. Early schedules have been especially friendly to some teams and harsh on others. It’s great that Lourdes Gurriel is on pace for 50 home runs and 200 RBI. But when you consider that seven of Arizona’s first 13 games were against Colorado, it puts some of those numbers in perspective. This does not mean Gurriel cannot parlay this hot start into a career year. After all, success breeds confidence, and confidence is key when it comes to performing at a high level. However, I am not ready to anoint Gurriel a top-100 overall player quite yet.

Below are my latest rest-of-season rankings. These should be used more to evaluate roster moves such as trades and waiver wire pickups rather than weekly start/sit decisions. I tried to keep it uniform with the same number of players as last week’s list. Feel free to sound off below and let me know which players you think I am too high or low on.
