With the 7th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected EDGE Josh Allen of Kentucky.
After nearly reaching the Super Bowl two seasons ago, Jacksonville failed to reach expectations last year. Blake Bortles was a popular scapegoat, but the defense also took a step back after a dominant 2017. With the addition of Allen, the Jaguars are once again poised to be among the best defenses in the NFL.
Fantasy Impact of Josh Allen
Jacksonville’s defense finished just 14th in fantasy points last season after leading the way the year before. The Jaguars were just 22nd in sacks and 23rd in turnovers created a season ago. Josh Allen should help on both fronts. The senior had 17 sacks last season and forced five fumbles. He joins a defensive line that already boasts standout defenders Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, and Marcell Dareus. The Jaguars may have more pressing needs on their roster, but they selected a player who some labeled as this year’s best overall prospect.
Allen has elite explosiveness and speed to go along with a projectable frame. He is a versatile defender who can even drop back into coverage when necessary. His presence should help Jacksonville return to being an elite fantasy defense in 2019. They should challenge Chicago and the Los Angeles Rams for the top spot among fantasy defenses this season.
For those playing in IDP leagues, Allen will be someone to monitor in redraft leagues and is a high-end target in dynasty formats. He may not have the weekly floor that many players have right away, but he will get to the quarterback and create turnovers.
