Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

None of the pitchers placed on the Injured List should come across as a surprising development. The only real shock was the designation given to Emmet Sheehan who was placed on the Injured List with right forearm inflammation. Before today, the thought was that he was suffering from general shoulder soreness. Given how it’s worded, he may require a longer stay on the Injured List than what was previously believed. As for Buehler, he recently threw three innings of live BP and saw his fastball hit 97 miles per hour.

Kenley Jansen – RP Boston Red Sox

Jansen’s return continues to get pushed back, making it more and more likely that he will start the year on the Injured List. It’s now at the point where even if he is fully healed by Opening Day, he just might not be properly built up. The team has not yet ruled him out for Opening Day mind you, so for now, it’s a speculative concern.

Eduardo Rodríguez – SP Arizona Diamondbacks

Rodríguez was removed from the game before the start of the second inning. He was seen wincing in pain and needed to be attended to by trainers. The team admittedly said that they would know more about this injury today, so stay tuned for updates. A potential trip to the Injured List seems possible.

Alex Cobb – SP San Francisco Giants

This is nothing short of incredible. As stated, Cobb was due back much later this year but instead will throw against the Cubs later this week. That being said, there’s still the fear of a re-injury here, as returning so soon does raise some eyebrows. However, all fingers are crossed that he can come out, pitch somewhat effectively, and return as soon as possible. He still will need to ramp up before being a fixture in the team’s rotation.

Jordan Westburg – 2B/3B Baltimore Orioles

There was some concern about Westburg after leaving yesterday’s game. It was revealed afterward that he would be fine going forward. Consider him DTD.

Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles

Bradish responded well to throwing, which is a good sign. He continues to progress, though there is still no timeline for a return. The team needs to be extra careful not to rush him, especially at the beginning of the season. It would be a surprise if he returns before May, at the earliest.

Ryan Mountcastle – 1B Baltimore Orioles

This is great news, as it looks like Mountcastle’s neck ailment is all but healed.

José Urquidy – SP Houston Astros

Urquidy will be shut down for the remainder of his 10-15 day break. The hope is that he can return to the rotation in due time, but they need to be very careful not to rush him. He will still need time to build himself back up, so anything before the beginning of May seems very unlikely.

Cincinnati Reds – Team Update

The good news here is that two out of three ain’t bad. Both McLain and Fraley seemed to have avoided anything serious concerning their respective injuries. Today will be telling to see if either hitter makes it into the Reds’ lineup. As for Williamson, it was announced after this original tweet that he would be headed to the Injured List to begin the season.

Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays

Romano’s news came out of nowhere. It was revealed that he had soreness but was still throwing. His use of an injection will be shut down from throwing for a few days. With no structural damage in his MRI, the hope here is that rest will allow him to get back out there soon enough. That being said, it seems likely that he begins the season on the Injured List.

Kevin Gausman – SP Toronto Blue Jays

Today will be an important day for Gausman who will treat it like a regular start. If his shoulder responds well after this, he may be ready to increase his usage going forward. While he won’t be ready for Opening Day, it may not be long afterward when he’s ready to go. Stay tuned.

Luis Rengifo – INF Los Angeles Angels

Rengifo’s history with hamstring tightness could lead one to believe that a trip to the Injured List is forthcoming, though nothing has been made official. He’s been a fun and exciting player to watch when he plays, but staying on the field has been a challenge for him.
