MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, May 7, 2024.

Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs (oblique), Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs (ribs)

This is the first real update that we have had on Suzuki in a while, and knowing that he will need an assignment helps evaluate his ETA. As for Bellinger, that’s great news, so be prepared.

Steven Kwan – OF Cleveland Guardians (hamstring)

Kwan’s diagnosis was finally revealed, and it appears that he will miss more than the ten-day minimum here. The good news is that he should be back shortly afterward with the hope that he can continue his hot start. Expect some downtime while he recovers and a rehab assignment once he’s just about ready to return.

Blake Snell – SP San Francisco Giants (thigh)

Snell continues to progress and will do so by throwing to live batters today. If all goes well, he may just come off the Injured List without a rehab assignment. That said, given that he missed Spring Training, the team may be wise to let him throw.

Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers (groin)

The initial worry here was that he would miss significant time with a sports hernia. Since that is not the case, his time away from the team should be cut down immensely. While Eovaldi does have a long(er) history of injuries, the team doesn’t expect him to miss much more than the fifteen-game minimum. Stay tuned.

Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (knee)

Buxton has essentially given way here to the fact that his body can’t hold up anymore. Whether he means more with this current injury or with future ones, he has not topped 140 games played since 2017. Concerning his current injury, Buxton will continue to manage it by listening to his body and not pushing through the pain. That could mean extended time away, as this makes it quite vague.

Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)

Yelich said that he felt better recently, and the work that he put in on the field shows it. While it’s good to see that he is in the final stage of his recovery, it remains to be seen if he will have a rehab assignment. The guess would be no, but only the Brewers’ Brass will know that answer.

Giovanny Gallegos – RP St. Louis Cardinals (shoulder), Tommy Edman – 2B/SS/OF St. Louis Cardinals (wrist)

Gallegos heads to the Injured List for the next two weeks after having failed to record at least one out in his last two appearances. Meanwhile, Edman continues to work on swinging a bat but he has yet been cleared to do much more than that. He cannot return until at least May 24, and there is no guarantee that he makes it back by then.

Nolan Jones – OF Colorado Rockies (back)

This was the first real activity that Jones has done since being shut down indefinitely over a week ago. It remains to be seen what’s next for him, but it all depends on how his body responds. The team seems okay to be taking things slowly here.

Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (thumb)

It’s good to see that Alvarez is on the right track for a return. He’s exactly where he should be.

Braxton Garrett – SP Miami Marlins (shoulder)

It remains to be seen what’s next for Garrett, but he could be back with the Marlins on the weekend.
