2023 Fantasy Football: Week 17 Quarterback Rankings (Weekend Update!)

Quarterback injuries remain a thorn in our fantasy side as we prepare for the fantasy football championships. The latest injuries to Trevor Lawrence (sprained shoulder) and Brock Purdy (stinger) could significantly impact fantasy lineups. Zach Wilson is already ruled out of Week 17 with a concussion, and it’s unclear if C.J. Stroud will return this week while also dealing with a concussion. There’s a lot to keep track of, so let’s get to my Week 17 quarterback rankings and notes. Let’s go!

Injury Notes for Week 17

  • Brock Purdy is dealing with a stinger. He should be able to suit up for Sunday’s game against the Commanders, barring a setback. UPDATE: Purdy practiced in full and should be good to go this week.
  • Trevor Lawrence sprained his shoulder and is questionable for Week 17. C.J. Beathard will start against the Panthers if Lawrence can’t suit up. UPDATE: Lawrence has been ruled OUT of Week 17.
  • C.J. Stroud has been sidelined for two weeks with a concussion. If he’s unable to play in Week 17, Case Keenum will likely get the start. UPDATE: Stroud cleared concussion protocol and is on track to play Sunday.
  • Kyler Murray missed two practices this week with an illness and is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. If he’s unable to suit up, Clayton Tune will start for the Cardinals.
  • Will Levis missed Week 16 with a high-ankle sprain, and his Week 17 status is uncertain. If he can’t suit up, Ryan Tannehill will be under center again for the Titans. UPDATE: Levis practiced in full this week and is expected to play in Week 17.

Quarterback Notes

  • Russell Wilson is coming off one of his best performances of the season. He completed 25 of 37 passes for 238 yards and two scores. He also tacked on 20 yards on the ground. Wilson should have another strong game against the Chargers in Week 17. Los Angeles has given up the second-most passing yards and fourth-most fantasy points to the position. Also, the Chargers have allowed six rushing touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks, tied for second-most. Don’t be surprised if Wilson cashes in on that front — he’s scored three touchdowns with his legs in the past five weeks. Wilson is a back-end QB1 for me in Week 17. UPDATE: The Broncos benched Wilson for the final two games of the season in order to avoid triggering an injury clause in his contract. Wilson’s time is all but over in Denver. Jarrett Stidham will now close out the season for Denver.
  • Baker Mayfield is playing some of his best football of the season right now. He’s been the QB2 in fantasy points over the last three weeks, throwing eight touchdowns and no picks in that span. He should continue to bring the fantasy goodness in Week 17 despite a tougher matchup against the Saints. Mayfield last faced New Orleans in Week 4 and fared well, throwing for 246 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Mayfield should play well again in a re-match at home. Roll Mayfield out with confidence in Week 17.
  • Derek Carr has come on strong during the fantasy football playoffs. He threw three touchdowns in back-to-back weeks and scored the fifth-most fantasy points among quarterbacks in that span. Carr should continue to roll during championship week. He gets a juicy divisional matchup against a Buccaneers team that has allowed the most passing yards and ninth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks. Carr could pile up fantasy points this week, and he ranks as the QB12 in my Week 17 quarterback rankings.
  • Joe Flacco has been excellent over the past three weeks. The veteran has racked up the most pass attempts (131) and passing yards (1.053) in that span, in addition to the fourth-most fantasy points. However, Flacco is a fade for me in Week 17. He faces a stingy Jets defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points to the position. They’ve also given up the second-fewest passing yards and touchdowns to opposing quarterbacks. Flacco’s fantastic run could come to an end this week.
