Week 6 CFF Waiver Wire, Best/Worst Week 7 Matchups, And More!!!

We finally had the weekend of upsets that we were dying to have in College Football. Iowa State went into Stillwater led by a third-string quarterback (sound familiar) and beat the Pokes, Texas almost choked in the fourth quarter but held strong to defeat Oklahoma, and Nick Fitzgerald proved he still had it against Auburn. With injuries to Cole McDonald, Ty Gangi, and AJ Dillon still in play, here are some big CFF waiver wire names after week six of the College Football season.

Also be sure to check out some of the better matchups for Week 7 as well as the All-Week Six Team a little further down the page.

CFF Waiver Wire

Quarterbacks

Brandon McIlwain, California

Ownership: 2%

California has had a vast uncertainty all season long at quarterback with three different players earning starts. This past weekend, South Carolina-transfer Brandon McIlwain drew his first start after rushing for 100-plus and a touchdown last week and followed it up with a similar stat line against Arizona. The turnover problem he seems to have should be limited over the next several weeks against UCLA and Oregon State who have miserable run defenses.

Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati

Ownership: 15%

Don’t let Michael Warren II’s top-10 rushing numbers distract you from the fact that Desmond Ripper has scored 25+ in every week over the last month. The now No. 25 Cincinnati Bearcats have looked vastly improved all offseason long behind Ripper and Warren II and they are going to keep the trend going against Temple and SMU over the next several weeks.

Others to Consider

Shai Werts Georgia Southern, 15%; Donald Hammond III Air Force, >1%; Adrian Martinez Nebraska, 35%; Brock Purdy Iowa State, >5%

Running Backs

B.J. Smith, Troy

Ownership: 12%

Troy hasn’t been handing the ball off a ton this season, but when they have, BJ Smith has been the guy. Smith has gotten less than 20 carries in every game this season but has 100+ yards and two touchdowns in each of the last two games. Troy has the luxury of taking on back to back lackluster ren defenses in the Liberty Flames and the South Alabama Jaguars over the next several weeks and Smith should keep on keeping on moving forward.

Kesean Strong, Old Dominion

Ownership: 0%

Old Dominion’s offense has not been they’ve lost all season long (you know, outside of that Virginia Tech win). Several players such as Blake LaRussa, Johnathan Duhart, and Travis Fulgham have begun making a fantasy impact over the past several weeks and now Kesean Strong has thrown his hat into that ring. Strong injured his hamstring early in the season after being named the heir to the departing Ray Lawry and made a statement in his return. The Monarch back ran for 99 yards and two scores in a losing effort against FAU. He took over 20 carries in the week six game and his workload shouldn’t decrease considering the low rushing output from Jeremy Cox.

Others to Consider

Elijah Mitchell Louisiana, >1%; Joshua Kelley UCLA, 1%; Tavares Thomas Middle Tennessee, 2%

Wide Receiver/Tight Ends

JD Spielman, Nebraska

Ownership: 23%

Many College Fantasy experts, including myself, going into the season expected Stanley Morgan Jr.’s stock to soar due to the upscale quarterback play from Adrian Martinez. Martinez has elevated the offense when he’s fully healthy but it’s not Morgan Jr. that is benefiting the most, but rather J.D. Spielman. Spielman currently leads the team in receptions and receiving touchdowns, and as long as Martinez can stay on the field, Spielman will remain fantasy relevant.

Miles Boykin, Notre Dame

Ownership: 7%

That’s right P5-Only leaguers, we’ve got at least two guys available for you this week. The Notre Dame receivers haven’t seen much of the fantasy limelight for most of the season considering Brandon Wimbush can barely throw a forward pass, and it seems that Ian Book is now the long-term solution as the season progresses. Miles Boykin has been the biggest benefactor of this change and is now the favorite target of Book. Over the past two weeks, Boykin has caught 19 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns and his usage shouldn’t falter considering his 6-4 stature makes him a matchup problem for most teams the Irish play.

Dayton Furuta, Hawaii

Ownership: 17%

Tight end hasn’t exactly been the most stable of positions this season with only four or five really consistent options at the position compared to last year when there were enough to have depth at the spot. The beauty of a player like Jaylen Samuels last season was his usage as a running back in goalline situations giving him a greater chance at rushing touchdowns as a tight end. Furuta isn’t Jaylen Samuels, but he has gotten double-digit carries over the past three weeks and the converted linebacker has the ability to play running back and tight end in fantasy matchups.

Others to Consider

Landon Wolf Oklahoma State, >5%; Travis Fulgham Old Dominion, 10%; Damon Hazelton Virginia Tech, 15%; Matt Bushman BYU, 26%
