The Blue Jays have traded prospects Edward Olivares and Jared Carkuff to the Padres for infield utilityman Yangervis Solarte. As both rosters stand post-trade, zero fantasy implications are felt.

The 30-year-old Solarte, who batted .255/.314/.416 with 18 homers in 512 plate appearances in 2017, is the trade’s centerpiece, but he moves from being a backup in San Diego to being a backup in Toronto. He’ll see some time subbing for Devon Travis, Troy Tulowitzki, and Josh Donaldson, but it’s doubtful he gets enough playing time to be relevant. His path to playing involves one of the three heading to the DL. Even then, Aledmys Diaz, acquired from the Cardinals earlier in the offseason, may get the call. While Solarte showed flashes of talent in the past, it was not enough for the Padres to have faith him. Instead, they traded for Freddy Galvis.

As for the Padres’ return, Olivares hit .269/.327/.468 between Low-A and High-A last season with 17 homers and 20 stolen bases, while Carkuff held a 3.86 ERA with a 7.3 K/9 over 63 frames across four minor league levels in 2017. Both figure to be non-factors for the 2018 season.
