Cardinals Sign Greg Holland on Opening Day

The Cardinals waited until the last second to sign Greg Holland to a one-year, $14 million deal. While not 100% finalized, Holland will be the Cards' de facto closer once he’s added to the roster. The 32-year-old righty threw about as good as could be expected for a Rockies closer. His 3.61 ERA and an 11.0 K/9 helped him to 41 saves in 2017. Moving out of Colorado should help both his ERA and WHIP, along with his overall fantasy production. He's a must-own at this point. The problem for Holland's owners, or soon-to-be…

MLB Hot Stove Preview

Now that the Houston Astros have won the World Series, we have officially entered the "hot stove league" portion of the baseball season. According to MLB.com, "In the early days of baseball, Hot Stove Season referred to an actual baseball season: Hot Stove Leagues, in which MLB players would stay in shape by playing baseball in their hometowns while staying warm with actual hot stoves. The term soon expanded to become a kind of predecessor to the water cooler -- on a cold day, fans would gather around the hot stove to…

The Closer Catch-Up: Fantasy Baseball Week 22

The Pirates are playing for nothing more than pocket money at this stage, but it's important to recognize even the smallest of victories during this tedious rebuild. There's, of course, that Andrew McCutchen guy, but often lost in the fray is Felipe Rivero, basking in all of his 1.29 ERA glory. I watched as Rivero completely pulled the rug from beneath the Reds on Saturday night. He struck out Jose Peraza, Joey Votto and Adam Duvall on 16 pitches, and didn't allow a single ball in play. Rivero has registered at least one…

The Closer Catch-Up: Fantasy Baseball Week 21

August is kinda like the Sunday of summer. Only now, we're not so sure the Yankees or the Rockies will be going back to work in September.Capturing confidence has been as difficult as capturing saves for closers this season, and after such a dominant first half, here we are talking about Aroldis Chapman and Greg Holland's misadventures for the 53rd time. To bring you up to speed, it happened again! Chapman allowed seven earned runs across seven games last week, so he's out in New York. As for Holland, well, he was dealt…

The Closer Catch-Up: Fantasy Baseball Week 20

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. So the calculator tells me Greg Holland and Jake McGee have combined for a 48.60 ERA over the last week. The toaster also tells me the Rockies could be lucky to make the Wild Card. What? That's normal ...? Anyway, that sure is a big crooked number in the Rockies clubhouse. Feels like only yesterday we were talking about Holland in the same sentence as Kenley Jansen. I now ask you to all join hands, because I'd like to reflect on what was a pretty awesome... um, half season.…
