MLB News and Notes: Week of April 16

In early April, no sample size is too small. We're just a few games into the 2018 season, and some fantasy owners are already reading way too much into everything.  Take a gander at social media or listen to sports/fantasy baseball radio. Players who’ve started slow are wastes of space, while players who've started hot are this year's fantasy MVPs. There are still about 150 more games to play, so a lot's going to happen. It’s way, way early. Resist the urge to view the early goings through a pessimist’s lens. But what you…

MLB News and Notes: Week of April 2

It was amazing to see how many people on social media borrowed the lyrics from the classic Andy Williams' Christmas tune "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and turned it into a song for the MLB Opening Day 2018. Forget the day after the Super Bowl becoming a holiday. If MLB continues to schedule all of the teams for this day, MLB Opening Day should become the new sports-related holiday. Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ started out this day by hitting a home run on the first pitch of the first game, which leads us…

Al Melchior’s Bold Predictions

With nearly all of my drafts and auctions in the rear view mirror, it's time to tally up the players who wound up on my rosters again and again. It's also an opportunity to take note of which players I avoided like an approaching swarm of bees. I'm carrying C.J. Cron, Franchy Cordero and Alex Claudio, among others, on several of my rosters, even though none was burning up the ADP rankings. What, exactly, are my best hopes for these late-round fliers? And what are my worst fears about the players I completely eschewed?…

Alex Cobb Finally Decides on Baltimore for New Home

The Orioles have signed Alex Cobb to a four-year deal, with a provision that he will start the 2018 season in the minors to get stretched out. Cobb was one of the last major free agents to sign. Greg Holland is the last major holdout. The 30-year-old righty threw productively last season, posting a 3.66 ERA in 179 innings of work. Most of his value came from not walking anyone (2.2 BB/9). He needed to limit the walks since his strikeouts have dropped (8.5 K/9 to 6.5 K/9) since missing the 2015 season because of Tommy John…

2018 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Starting Pitchers, Part 3 (51-75)

This gets said most seasons, but starting pitching is incredibly deep. Between safe veteran options and up-and-coming young flamethrowers, there's a little bit of everything in this part of the rankings. I've always preached the depth of pitching while filling out your roster. It's certainly important to grab some top-tier arms, but filling out your pitching staff with strong late-round options can pay big dividends. And this year, the late-round options you'll find below are quite intriguing. Included are several…
