Giants, what should I do with these guys?
Before we enter a new week ahead let’s take a look at the Giants and how they have been performing. Maybe, I should say under performing.
Last week was just awful. The San Francisco Giants would win just one game and saw them get blasted in Cincinnati to the Reds. A very humiliating 31-5 in total scoring. The first two games the Reds scored 14 runs and then returned the next day to put up 13.
With these kinds of numbers, it’s hard to say what direction to go with San Francisco. In the end, this couldn’t help me think about the movie Major League. In the diner scene, when one friend tells the other, “Who are these f’ckin guys?” Second, It literally got so bad that the team bus for San Francisco broke down on the way to the airport to fly out of Cincinnati. Remember the flight scene and the taped up propeller?

Against the New York Mets, it wasn’t much better. The Giants would lose the first two games in New York 10-4. However, they turned it around winning today 6-5. It’s a good thing they took a three-run lead against the Mets in the ninth, as New York would score two more in the bottom half of the inning and leaving the tying run at second.
As for the fantasy ownership over the last week:
- Buster Posey: 9/20 (.450) six runs, three home runs, three RBI
- Hunter Pence: 3/21 (.142) three runs, one home run, three RBI
- Brandon Belt: 0/18 (.000) one run, one RBI
- Eduardo Nunez: 5/20 (.400) two runs, zero home runs, one RBI
- Brandon Crawford: Still injured. Return looming
- Christian Arroyo: 5/20 (.400) two runs, one home run, four RBI
- Johnny Cueto: Seven innings pitched, six hits, two earned, one walk, ten strikeouts, loss
- Madison Bumgarner: Out until All-Star break
- Jeff Samardzija: Seven innings pitched, ten hits, six earned, no walks, nine strikeouts, loss
- Mark Melancon: Out until May 16th
This week ahead
[the_ad id=”384″]Obviously, these are rough numbers. Two things stick out to me. No stolen bases and get Christian Arroyo on your fantasy team. As for Mark Melancon, if you can hold out until he returns, that’s probably best. In the meantime, the Giants will most likely depend on a rotational closer. Derek Law was pulled today after giving up three hits and two runs. He did get his second save in the year, however.
The Giants will be taking on the Cincinnati Reds starting tomorrow in a four-game series. San Francisco will have Cueto on the mound, so he is an automatic start. Also, consider putting in “Shark” in the last game. He has performed well at home. He has given up just nine earned runs in three games even though he has been accountable for two losses. I am also hoping Brandon Crawford makes it back to start this series, so keep an eye out for that.
After the Reds, they will face division rival Los Angeles Dodgers. This may be a good time for Giants bats to come alive if they continue to falter against the Reds. Los Angeles will be sending out Kenta Maeda who has been settling down after giving up 17 runs in the first four outings. His last two he has pitched 12 innings and only given up three earned with 12 strikeouts. However, he has only gone over six innings once in his starts. Rich Hill will make the game two start and has only two starts on the season.

Hill allowed two in runs in just three innings before being pulled. He did go on the 10-day DL after that start. Los Angeles will have Hyun-Jin Ryu pitch game three. Like Maeda, he didn’t start strong but has been turning it around. Ryu gave up ten runs in the first three games, but only two in his last two starts. Also, like Maeda, he has not gone more than six innings in any of his starts.
