Fantasy EPL Waiver Wire Targets
Yerry Mina
Position: Defender
Team: Everton
Ownership: 24%
Next 5 Fixtures: WAT (H), avl (A), WOL (H), bou (A), SHU (H)
Prospects: Yerry Mina looks set to be in Everton’s XI for the majority of the season, and could provide you with points needed to win a championship. Everton have arguably one of the easiest schedules to start the season of any EPL team. In his first game Mina finished with 15.25 points around the same that Michael Keane ended with. Keane was going between Rounds 5-8 in drafts this summer, while Mina went undrafted in many. Mina has the potential to give similar points value as Keane and as we saw from the 2018 World Cup is just as much as a goal threat. Even if you have 2-3 premium defenders Mina can add stability and constant points to your team. I would look to use even as high as a top 3 waiver claim on Mina, with the potential of replicating the stats of a reliable DEF1.
Christian Benteke
Position: Forward
Team: Crystal Palace
Ownership: 27%
Next 5 Fixtures: shu (A), mun (a), AVL (H), tot (A), WOL (H)
Prospects: Christian Benteke is everything you could want in a fantasy forward; wins numerous headers, gets you key passes, the odd tackle and interception, but his only flaw is he can’t score. If Benteke can find his footing with the help of Zaha as his strike partner he could be in for a monster season. He is a perfect FWD3 for any team who will consistently score you 6-10 points and has tremendous upside; as shown in GW1 where he scored 8 points with no goals or assists. Hodgson seems to want to give Benteke every chance to prove himself in the starting XI, and that should make him worth a claim from your waiver wire. If Benteke is available on your waiver wire I would look to use a top 5 waiver priority on him.
Philip Billing
Position: Midfielder
Team: Bournemouth
Ownership: 30%
Next 5 Fixtures: avl (A), MCI (H), lei (A), EVE (H), sou (A)
Prospects: A late signing for the Cherries, could be a hidden gem for your fantasy team. Billing started the first game of the season and played all 90 minutes scoring 14.5 points, with no goals or assists. Billing is in the tier of fantasy players who can fill the stat sheet week in and week out. He showed us this last season in the EPL when he was on Huddersfield averaging 8.4PPM. Now he is on a better team and should chip in with a few more goals and assists. Even if not Billing is a reliable MID4 in most 12 team leagues, and can be used in any matchup due to his defensive stats. Look for Billing on your waiver wire in leagues of 8 teams or more.
Leander Dendoncker
Position: Midfielder
Team: Wolves
Ownership: 21%
Next 5 Fixtures: MUN (H), BUR (H), eve (A), CHE (H), cpl (A)
Prospects: Dendoncker looks set to be a key part of Nuno’s XI this year. Now he probably won’t be going 10g/10a this season but if he contributes with 3g/4a then on top of all his ghost points he will be a very steady MID5 for your fantasy team. Dendoncker came away with a solid 10 points from the opening weekend and those points came through a variety of categories. In deeper leagues, you want players like Dendoncker who can fill up the stat sheet, and provide you consistent points. I would look for Dendoncker on the waiver wire in a league of 10 teams or more and use him when a big name is rested or if you need a MID5 for that week.
Fantasy EPL Trade Targets
Matt Ritchie
Position: Midfielder
Team: Newcastle
Next 5 Fixtures: nor (A), tot (A), WAT (H), liv (A), BHA (H)
Prospects: Matt Ritchie is a lock in Newcastle’s XI and will be playing higher up the pitch. Ritchie is also on the majority of set pieces including penalties. While he did get a very respectable 9.5 points vs. Arsenal; his upcoming schedules may have managers considering the right trade offer. My recommendation is to pair a MID5/6 with a DEF3 or a FWD3 to get Matt Ritchie, and a 2nd player in a position you need. A good example would be pairing a player like Granit Xhaka, who starts every game but isn’t as consistent with Steve Cook you could probably get Matt Ritchie. Although you may think you are giving up a lot of value I truly believe even in 12 team leagues there are plenty of defenders available on the waiver wire, so you can replace the extra player you receive in the trade with one of them.
