Fantasy EPL Gameweek 9 Sleepers XI

For this article, we use the ownership statistics from Fantrax.  Our only rule is that each player we highlight is required to have ownership of 60% or below at the time of writing.  Therefore there’s a good chance these players will be free agents in your Fantrax Draft League!

GK: Alphonse Areola

Team: Fulham

Opponent: Everton (Home)

Ownership: 18%

Points Last Gameweek: 12.5

Prospects: Alphonse Areola is one of my current favorite Fantrax goalkeepers. The French World Cup winner (didn’t make an appearance at the 2018 tournament) is proving himself to be a trusted performer with a solid base of points. The Fulham shot-stopper has three double-digit hauls in a row, and five scores of 7+ in a row. Really solid scoring for a goalkeeper! This weekend Areola faces Everton, and I would expect him to concede one or two goals, but make five or six saves.

DEF: Patrick Van Aanholt

Team: Crystal Palace

Opponent: Burnley (Away)

Ownership: 57%

Points Last Gameweek: 15.5

Prospects: Patrick Van Aanholt has started the last two games for the Eagles, after missing the start of the season through injury. The Crystal Palace left-back produced an assist and 15.5 points in Gameweek 8, and therefore he makes the cut for my Gameweek 9 Sleepers XI! The Dutchman is a decent defender to own in Fantrax. He gains a fair few attacking returns, and people forget how solid Palace can be at the back. This weekend Van Aanholt faces a trip to Burnley, who haven’t scored at home so far this season!

DEF: Vladimir Coufal

Team: West Ham United

Opponent: Sheffield United (Away)

Ownership: 52%

Points Last Gameweek: 17.75

Prospects: I backed Vladimir Coufal last week, and he bagged a huge score of 17.75 points. I’m a really big fan of Coufal. He’s now firmly established himself in the West Ham side and attacks a huge amount from his right wing-back position. The Czech international is a really solid addition in any size league, and I’ve got him ranked inside the Top 20 Defenders for the rest of the season. Look to trade Coufal into your Fantrax side, he’s a player on the up! This weekend the Hammers face a trip to struggling Sheffield United.

DEF: Ben Mee

Team: Burnley

Opponent: Crystal Palace (Home)

Ownership: 51%

Points Last Gameweek: 12.5

Prospects: Ben Mee returned to the Burnley side in Gameweek 8 and gained a clean sheet and 12.5 points. If the Burnley boy wasn’t picked up prior to Gameweek 8, or on waivers after the Gameweek, then you should really pick him up. Mee is a solid DEF3 and Burnley will be much better at the back now that their captain has returned to the side. A worthy inclusion in my Gameweek 9 Sleepers XI, and a worthy inclusion in any Fantrax roster ahead of the match against Palace.

DEF: Antonee Robinson

Team: Fulham

Opponent: Everton (Home)

Ownership: 34%

Points Last Gameweek: 4.25

Prospects: Antonee Robinson is another player that I backed last week and another player that I’m a big fan of. The reason why? The American left-back attacks a hell of a lot, and picks up a good amount of points for both attacking and defensive statistics. A PPG of nearly 9 points is an amazing effort for a Fulham defender, and one of the reasons why I’ve ranked Robinson as the 25th best defender for the rest of the season.

MID: Pascal Gross

Team: Brighton & Hove Albion

Opponent: Aston Villa (Away)

Ownership: 41%

Points Last Gameweek: 14

Prospects: Two games. Two 14 point returns. Things are looking up for Pascal Gross. But Potter’s rotation is surely going to bite sooner rather than later. We may have one more week of the Gross Express this weekend as Brighton face a trip to Aston Villa. If you can bring in the German midfielder then I would recommend doing so. I backed Gross last week, and I’m going back to the well for my Gameweek 9 Sleepers too. This one may crash and burn, but I’m backing Gross once more.

MID: Josh Brownhill

Team: Burnley

Opponent: Crystal Palace (Home)

Ownership: 19%

Points Last Gameweek: 6

Prospects: Josh Brownhill is a current FF Chaps favorite due to his extremely consistent nature. The Burnley midfielder plays 90 minutes and gains 6 to 8 points. Job done. Onto the next week!! Every Fantrax squad needs a consistent scoring midfielder to slot into the starting eleven when required. And Brownhill ticks all of the boxes for that role. Next.

MID: Filip Krovinovic

Team: West Bromwich Albion

Opponent: Manchester United (Away)

Ownership: 9%

Points Last Gameweek: 15.5

Prospects: Filip Krovinovic put in an amazing performance in Gameweek 8, as he gained a stunning score of 15.5 points against Tottenham. The Croatian midfielder has had a slow start to life in the Premier League, after a prolonged return to the Hawthorns after a successful loan spell last term. With Pereira and Diangana missing out last time around, it was up to Krovinovic to provide the creativity for Billic’s men. And he did that and more! Three key passes, two successful dribbles, three aerial wins, and three successful tackles were the highlights of his performance last time around. Krovinovic is a great asset to my Gameweek 9 Sleepers XI!

FWD: Jordan Ayew

Team: Crystal Palace

Opponent: Burnley (Away)

Ownership: 54%

Points Last Gameweek: 17.5

Prospects: Jordan Ayew returned to the Crystal Palace starting eleven in Gameweek 8, and scored during the 4-1 victory over Leeds. I expect him to therefore keep his place in the side for the trip to Burnley this weekend. Ayew is a decent forward to own in Fantrax, but he’s fairly goal dependent. The Ghanaian has scored two goals during his five starts this season, which gained him double-digit points returns. But in the three games he didn’t score, he gained 1.5, 1, and 2.5 points. Ayew is not a forward you can rely on for consistent points, but hopefully, he’s a forward you can rely on to start every game (which is half the battle with forwards in deep leagues!).

FWD: Raphinha

Team: Leeds United

Opponent: Arsenal (Home)

Ownership: 26%

Points Last Gameweek: 2

Prospects: It’s been a pretty slow start for Raphinha at Leeds United to say the least. The Brazilian winger was signed towards the end of the transfer window and has only made three substitute appearances for his new side so far. After coming on at half time during the 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 8, I’m expecting (hoping) for a start this weekend. Raphinha is a really talented footballer, and his statistics for Rennes from last season show that he could become a strong Fantrax asset. This weekend Leeds face Arsenal, and Raphinha makes his debut in my Gameweek 9 Sleepers XI!

FWD: Danny Welbeck

Team: Brighton & Hove Albion

Opponent: Aston Villa (Away)

Ownership: 14%

Points Last Gameweek: 11.5

Prospects: Danny Welbeck made my Reserve XI for the Gameweek 8 fixture against Burnley and returned an amazing 11.5 points without attacking returns. Three key passes and three aerials made up the majority of the veteran Englishman’s points score. Welbeck is a worthy addition to a Fantrax roster in a 12-team league, but potentially not in smaller leagues than that. Potter will rotate is attackers a lot, and isn’t afraid to drop a player and ruffle a few feathers! I would expect Welbeck to remain in the side this weekend. Hopefully, he can prove his fitness and become a regular performer for Brighton!

Average Ownership: 34%
