For this article, we use the ownership statistics from Fantrax.  Our only rule is that each player we highlight is required to have ownership of 60% or below at the time of writing.  Therefore there’s a good chance these players will be free agents in your Fantrax Draft League!

GK: Emiliano Martinez

Team: Arsenal

Opponent: Aston Villa

Ownership: 27%

Points Last Gameweek: 14

Prospects: Bernd Leno is Arsenal’s number 1, and rightly so; he’s arguably the best shot-stopper in the league. But from a fantasy perspective, Arsenal’s number 2 – Emiliano Martinez – may be just as useful. The Argentinian has an FP/G of 9.36 from his 7 games stepping in for the injured Leno, the highest number in the league. In fact, if you take only the 6 games that he’s started, this rises to 10.58. He (and Leno) benefit from an Arsenal side that, incredibly, allows the second-most shots on target in the division. In GW37 he comes up against a Villa side that, despite their lowly league position, take the 10th most shots per game.

DEF: Phil Bardsley

Team: Burnley

Opponent: Norwich City

Ownership: 20%

Points Last Gameweek: 19.75

Prospects: An absolute monster game for Bardsley in GW36, and even without the assist (something he’s not exactly known for!), his score would’ve been double-digits – the 3rd time he’s done this in his 5 games since the restart. He offers the best way into a Burnley defense that takes on “the best 20th placed team to ever grace the Premier League” (eye roll), though Erik Pieters (29% ownership) and Kevin Long (5%) are also viable options here. There are many stats we could use to demonstrate the Canaries’ incompetence this season, but let’s keep it simple this time: they’ve scored just 26 goals in 36 games – easily the lowest in the league – and 35% of these came in the first 5 games of the season. Yeesh.

GW37 Points Scored:  15.25

DEF: Tariq Lamptey

Team: Brighton & Hove Albion

Opponent: Newcastle United

Ownership: 21%

Points Last Gameweek: 3.5

Prospects: Graham Potter doesn’t have many guaranteed starters, but the young right-back has started 4 of Brighton’s 6 games since the restart, and he’s returned double-digit points in 3 of them. His FP/G during this period is 7.65, which may not seem that high but is still the best in his team, whilst his PP90 is a much more impressive 10.11. He looks good, particularly going forward (he’s even played in midfield on a couple of occasions…another potential bonus from a fantasy perspective), and with a game against Newcastle coming up, he should continue his decent form. The Magpies have now lost 3 on the bounce and their over-achievement may finally be coming to an end.

GW37 Points Scored:  7.75

DEF: Erik Pieters

Team: Burnley

Opponent: Norwich City

Ownership: 29%

Points Last Gameweek: 10

Prospects: We’re going to double-up on the Burnley defense because they’re playing Norwich, and as risks go, this is one of the safer ones to take. That said, if you don’t fancy it, check out the Gameweek 37 Sleepers Reserve XI, which has some great options that didn’t quite make the cut here because their starting status is far from guaranteed. Back to Pieters though. The fullback was a revelation at the start of the season with 4 double-digit hauls in the months of August and September. Then he lost his place in the side, and it’s only been since the restart when he’s rejoined it, but this time in midfield. Now Taylor is injured, expect him to slot back into the defense – just in time to face a Norwich side that is a magnet for opposition clean sheets.

MID: Conor Hourihane

Team: Aston Villa

Opponent: Arsenal

Ownership: 18%

Points Last Gameweek: 11

Prospects: Any time you can get hold of a starter who is on set pieces (or at least shares them) you should consider it. With Togga scoring, a whipped in free-kick or corner met by a head that goes even vaguely in the direction of goal should count as a key pass, and 2 potentially crucial points in your matchup. Hourihane can provide that. He’s started Villa’s last two games, where they’ve picked up 4 points and looked probably better than they have all season, so he should start again against Arsenal. His FP/G since the restart is 10.29, but that’s impacted negatively by 2 sub appearances. His PP90 is 14.86!

GW37 Points Scored:  1

MID: Stuart Armstrong

Team: Southampton

Opponent: Bournemouth

Ownership: 57%

Points Last Gameweek: 18.5

Prospects: Armstrong was (presumably!) rested against Brighton in GW36, which was bad news for any owners of his, but good news in that he should fresh and ready to go for the GW37 matchup against leaky Bournemouth. The Scot may only have a seasonal FP/G of 7.3, but don’t let that fool you – he has been on fire in 2020, with FP/G’s of 12.75 (January), 10.5 (February), 12.67 (June), and 16.67 (so far in July). In his last 3 games he’s brought in 19.5, 12, and 18.5 points in matches against Manchester City, Everton, and Manchester United, respectively. Bournemouth has conceded 15 in their 7 games since the restart – only Norwich have conceded more.

GW37 Points Scored:  3.5

MID: Johann Gudmundsson

Team: Burnley

Opponent: Norwich City

Ownership: 32%

Points Last Gameweek: 8.5

Prospects: We mentioned earlier how Pieters could be a beneficiary of the Charlie Taylor injury, but someone who probably gains even more than the left-back is cult hero Johann Gudmundsson. The Icelandic international hasn’t started a league game since October 5th after a season plagued by injuries, by fantasy historians will know that this guy can produce the goods. An FP/G of 9.8 in 2017/18, and whilst this dipped to 8.3 in 2018/19, the PP90 would have been much higher given that 10 of his 29 appearances were as a substitute. Again, this is another case of the “take advantage of Norwich” strategy that has paid off for most of the season.

GW37 Points Scored:  12.5

MID: David Brooks

Team: AFC Bournemouth

Opponent: Southampton

Ownership: 39%

Points Last Gameweek: 14

Prospects: Brooks’ return from injury has been hugely anti-climactic, but sometimes these things take their time before a return to pre-injury form is found. The 20+ minute cameo against City may just be that turning point for Brooks. Aside from obviously scoring the Bournemouth goal, the midfielder looked very lively, and perhaps more importantly for Eddie Howe, the team looked better too. From the moment he was subbed on, Bournemouth outperformed Manchester City in the XG battle 0.78 to 0.28. He should start in GW37, and whilst Southampton will be tough to beat, Bournemouth should have learned by now that attack is their best form of defense.

GW37 Points Scored:  2

FWD: Eddie Nketiah

Team: Arsenal

Opponent: Aston Villa

Ownership: 12%

Points Last Gameweek: n/a (suspended)

Prospects: Nketiah returns from his 3-game suspension and with Lacazette playing a lot of minutes recently, and Arsenal not having a lot of other options up top, we should see the youngster come back into the side against Aston Villa. His fantasy returns haven’t been the greatest, but Arteta clearly rates him, and Villa’s defense – whilst improved of late – is still one of the better ones to face if you’re a forward. That defense is also going to be pretty tired by now – Mings has played 720 minutes and Ngoyo has played 663 since the restart – compared to Nketiah who has played 259, and 0 since July 7th. Villa also needs to win, so if this is level going into the 2nd half, expect them to push forward, and in turn, leave space at the back.

GW37 Points Scored:  -0.5

FWD: Oliver McBurnie

Team: Sheffield United

Opponent: Everton

Ownership: 42%

Points Last Gameweek: 8.5

Prospects: There are many reasons to like McBurnie here. First, he has an FP/G of 10.5 since the restart – second best at Sheffield United during that time. Second, he has started 14 of the last 15 games for the Blades, so he should be pretty nailed on to start again. Third, the opposition in GW37 is Everton, a team that has looked beyond poor since their draw against Liverpool. And finally, fourth, he isn’t reliant on goals (just 22.3% of his points have come from finding the back of the net), which always feels nicer for a fantasy manager, knowing that even if Sheffield United do blank, there’s a good chance you’re not out of your matchup.

GW37 Points Scored:  3.5

FWD: Neal Maupay

Team: Brighton & Hove Albion

Opponent: Newcastle United

Ownership: 50%

Points Last Gameweek: 16.5

Prospects: On Thursday Maupay scored for the first time since his winner against Arsenal back in GW30, and he’ll be hoping he can add to that against what has become a porous Newcastle defense since the restart (13.27 XGA – worst in the league, 14 goals against – 3rd worst). I’m hoping so too, as unlike McBurnie, he is reliant on goals for his points. Whilst no one is safe from Potter-roulette (not sure that will stick as much as the original), his performance against Southampton should make him as safe a starter as there can be in that side. The seagulls are all but mathematically safe now, so perhaps the freedom will express itself in some more attacking football, of which Maupay can take advantage.
