College Fantasy Football Waiver Wire: Week 2 Gemstones

I absolutely loved watching the Alabama-Texas and Tennessee-Pittsburgh games yesterday before leaving to watch UConn host Syracuse at the Rent. Unfortunately, the Huskies got pounded by the Orange.

Leaving the game at the end of the third quarter to get home early, I wanted to begin my college fantasy football waiver wire column for the week. I stayed awake until 1 AM and awoke four hours later much to my wife’s dismay. In the fall, I get so excited that sleep eludes me on Sundays.

Do you need replacements off the waiver wire? Do not fret. Ryan and I have you covered. We highlight ten players to target this week in college fantasy football leagues.

Enjoy my fellow CFF diehards!

There’s no such thing as too much football! 2022 is the perfect time to add the college game to your fantasy football repertoire. Whether you want to create your own league or join an existing league, the Fantrax College Football Commissioner is the place to go!

Week 2 College Fantasy Football Waiver Wire

Quarterbacks

Kyle Vantrease, Georgia Southern (Laub)

Yards Per Attempt: 7.6

TD%: 4.9%

Total Fantasy Points: 52.1

New coach Clay Helton inherited a team that ran the triple-option attack, captured only three wins last year and lacked the players to execute his scheme. Helton has turned over the roster and guided the Panthers to victories in their first two games of the campaign.

Against Nebraska on the road as a heavy underdog, Kyle Vantrease carried out Helton’s aerial assault well enough for the victory. The 6’2” and 225-pounder surpassed 400 passing yards and completed 37-of-56 throws with a 1:2 TD-to-INT Ratio. He also added a touchdown rushing. In the first two games of the year, he passed for 776 yards and five touchdowns.

Last year, he started the opening 10 games for Buffalo and completed 161-of-262 passes for 1,861 yards and eight touchdowns while adding 115 yards and three scores on the ground. In five seasons for the Bulls, he completed nearly 60% of his throws for 4,755 yards and logged a 25:13 TD-to-INT RATIO, none of which foretell fantasy success. However, he is in a dynamic offense, which is going to throw the ball a ton: The Panthers have attempted 102 passes in the first two games of the year.

Vantrease might not be the most sexy quarterback on the waiver wire. Yet, he is a clear starter in an explosive passing game in a defensively-challenged conference. Keep a close eye on the Panthers’ passer in the upcoming weeks.

Carter Bradley, South Alabama (Cobbett)

Yards Per Attempt: 9.3

TD%: 8.9%

Total Fantasy Points: 53.7

Talk about consistency: Bradley is completing 65.2% of his passes and has a 6:1 TD-to-INT Ratio. He is averaging 307 yards and 34.2 fantasy points per game (FPPG). The Sun Belt is very competitive, but the Jaguars have a good outlook if Bradley can keep it up. He has two dynamic wide receivers in Jalen Wayne and Caullin Lacy, and the Jags have the second-best offense in the Sun Belt this season. Pick up Bradley…he is a CFF starter.

Honorable Mention Quarterbacks

N’Kosi Perry, Florida Atlantic

Yards Per Attempt: 9.4

TD%: 9.5%

Total Fantasy Points: 84.4

Michael Penix, Jr., Washington

Yards Per Attempt: 10.3

TD%: 9.0%

Total Fantasy Points: 51.9

Davis Brin, Tulsa

Yards Per Attempt: 9.3

TD%: 8.3%

Total Fantasy Points: 56.7%

Running Backs

Percy Agyei-Obese, James Madison (Cobbett)

Scrimmage Yards: 170

Touchdowns: 2

Total Fantasy Points: 29

Percy Agyei-Obese is a great guy to look at if you need some running back depth. He has 27 carries and 170 rushing yards across the first two games. He plays a consistent role in the offense, and if he can find the endzone, he will be a great find for your squad.

The Dukes have a very easy schedule, and they seem to be clicking on offense, scoring 107 points in their first two games. Pay attention to this runner if your team is hit by injuries.

La’Damian Webb, South Alabama (Laub)

Scrimmage Yards: 237

Touchdowns: 4

Total Fantasy Points: 51.7

It has been a long journey to CFF relevance for La’Damian Webb. Graduating high school in 2018, the Panthers’ runner has suited up for three different college programs, and finally, found a starting job at South Alabama.

In 2018, Webb was a 3-star prospect coming out of high school. He became the first underclassman in Alabama to be named the state’s Mr. Football (2017) after rushing for 3,242 yards and scoring 47 times.

He landed at Jones College, a JUCO program, and played there in 2019 and 2021. Last year, he was named JUCO First Team All-Mississippi Association Community College Conference team, gaining 1,399 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. He also snatched 10 receptions for 113 yards and returned 17 punts for 214 yards and a touchdown.

After two weeks, the Jaguars are 2-0, and Webb, 5’7” and 208-pounds, ranks as the No. 13 CFF running back in PPR formats with 51.7 fantasy points. He has scampered for 189 yards, logged four catches for 48 yards, and scored four rushing touchdowns, recording multiple scores in each of his first two games.

South Alabama’s schedule looks very welcoming after the UCLA game this upcoming Saturday. A member of the Sun Belt, the Jaguars are averaging over 40 points per game and likely will continue putting points on the scoreboard, which bodes well for Webb’s success in 2022.

Khalan Laborn, Marshall (Laub)

Scrimmage Yards: 277

Touchdowns: 3

Total Fantasy Points: 47.7

Watching Marshall

Two weeks ago, I identified Khalan Laborn as a weekly sleeper on the Rookie Big Board CFF Show before Week 1 kickoff. Against Norfolk State, he rambled for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, I had concerns about his production versus a stronger team and did not recommend Laborn against Notre Dame.

The Thundering Herd’s power back proved me wrong. Laborn stampeded the Fighting Irish for 163 rushing yards and a score. In two games replacing Rasheen Ali, Laborn has scored 45.7 fantasy points.

A 5-star recruit in 2017, Laborn was the No. 1 rated all-purpose running back by 247Sports. He signed with Florida State the same year as Cam Akers and saw limited action for the Seminoles. He redshirted as a freshman and suffered a knee injury the following campaign.

In 2019, he carried the ball 63 times for 297 yards and four scores. After the year, he was dismissed from the school, but stayed on campus to earn his degree. He enrolled at Marshall in the spring of this year and stepped into the spotlight.

At 5’11” and 212-pounds, Laborn looks like a solid runner who has finally found an opportunity to shine and reach expectations coming out of high school after overcoming adversity. The next three opponents are Bowling Green, Troy and Gardner-Webb, which is a cornucopia of fantasy matchups. There is no reason for Marshall’s starting back to remain on the waiver wire.

Henry Parrish, Jr., Miami (Cobbett)

Scrimmage Yards: 260

Touchdowns: 4

Total Fantasy Points: 56

It has been a solid start to the season for Henry Parrish, Jr., especially in Jaylan Knighton’s absence. It may guarantee him a steady and consistent share of the workload game-to-game even as Knighton factors back into the backfield.

Parrish has significantly more carries than anyone else and is also tied for second on the team in receptions (6). Parrish has averaged 26.8 FPPG so far this season as Miami will get their first test next week in College Station. If you need RB depth, Parrish, Jr. is your guy.

Honorable Mention Running Backs

Larry McCammon, Florida Atlantic

Scrimmage Yards: 355

Touchdowns: 2

Total Fantasy Points: 51.5

Toa Taua, Nevada

Scrimmage Yards: 327

Touchdowns: 4

Total Fantasy Points: 64.7

Tahj Brooks, Texas Tech

Scrimmage Yards: 165

Touchdowns: 4

Total Fantasy Points: 46.5

Seeking a quarterback on the waiver wire, who are you targeting this week?

  • N’Kosi Perry, Florida Atlantic: 27%
  • Davis Brin, Tulsa: 39%
  • Spencer Rattler, South Carolina: 26%
  • Other: 8%

“Davis Brin faces off versus Jacksonville State next week while Spencer Rattler faces Georgia and N’Kosi Perry has UCF. If it’s just to use next week, then Brin.” @NCAAFNation247

“With 800-plus passing yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception, give me Davis Brin.” @NinoBrown_T2T

“N’Kosi Perry for me but this one is close.” @aceholesrule

“Davis Brin: He has staggering passing numbers through two games with 782 yards and 7:1 TD:INT Ratio! If he can do it against NIU & Wyoming, something tells me he shouldn’t have a problem putting up his third straight 300-plus yard passing performance vs Jacksonville State.” @RJsFantasyFB

Need help in the backfield: Who would provide the biggest roster boost this week?

  • La’Damian Webb, South Alabama: 18%
  • Tahj Brooks, Texas Tech: 30%
  • Khalan Laborn, Marshall: 50%
  • Other: 2%

“Give me the ex-Seminole Laborn! 12 carries for 102 rushing yards in Week 1, then 31 for 163 yards and a touchdown vs Notre Dame!! With that solid 42-yarder!! @NinoBrown_T2T

“Khalan Laborn for me. Marshall runs the rock and this guy can play. Ali will not get his job back if/when he returns.” @aceholesrule

“I’m heavily invested in Rasheen Ali so it pains me to say it BUT if Khalan Laborn is still on your waiver wire he’s a must add! He’s topped 100 yards in both games & his 163 vs Notre Dame is head-turning!” @RJsFantasyFB

Acquiring home run hitters at receiver can provide CFF managers with a reliable starter: Who intrigues you the most?

  • Jalen McMillan, Washington: 27%
  • Antwane Wells, Jr.: South Carolina: 32%
  • Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State: 37%
  • Other: 4%

“Give me Emeka Egbuka…I know Marvin Harrison, Jr., broke out. But ‘Double E’ had another game: 4 catches for 118 yards and a score. I’ll still say best receiver at Ohio State.” @NinoBrown_T2T

“Emeka Egbuka for me. OSU churns out great wide receivers, and Egbuka is going to be a major contributor even when JSN returns.” @aceholesrule

“Emeka Egbuka gets my vote as well. Love having cogs in high-powered offenses. Will get good numbers, and if a teammate misses any time, stats could skyrocket too…must start territory.” @FabFalco

“Emeka Egbuka: Big-time, 5-star recruit out of high school and not only does he play with the best QB of the 3 (C.J. Stroud), he’s been awesome through two games scoring a touchdown in each and averaging 104 receiving yards per game.” @RJsFantasyFB

Wide Receivers

Antwane Wells, Jr., South Carolina (Laub)

Targets: 16

Team Target Share: 22.9%

Total Fantasy Points: 45.4

The Gamecocks are only 1-1, but the offense looks much better than last year. With Spencer Rattler throwing the football, the passing game is producing yards (301 yards) and points (32.5) per game. Antwane Wells, Jr. has risen to alpha status after two weeks.

Against Arkansas on the road, Wells scored his first touchdown—a catch-and-run 62-yarder—as a Gamecock. He also recorded a 64-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Wells concluded the afternoon with eight receptions for 185 yards and a touchdown.

His receiving yards tied for the eleventh highest-receiving yards in program history and the most since Deebo Samuel had 210 yards at Clemson in 2018. He is the No. 29 ranked receiver in PPR-scoring formats with 15 receptions for 244 yards and a touchdown, scoring 45.4 points.

At 6’1” and 207-pounds, Wells spent the past two seasons at James Madison (FCS). At JMU, he concluded his tenure third all-time in career receiving touchdowns (21), ninth in career receiving yards (1,853) and receptions (116). In 2021, he established single-season records for receiving yards (1,250), receiving touchdowns (15) and receptions (83). If you need an upgrade at receiver, Wells is a no-brainer to acquire this week.

LaJohntay Wester, Florida Atlantic (Cobbett)

Targets: 24

Team Target Share: 26%

Total Fantasy Points: 56.2

LaJohntay Wester dominated the game against SE Louisiana for the Owls as he brought in eight catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns, going for 34.2 fantasy points. In three games, Wester is averaging 18.7 FPPG this season.

Wester leads the Owls in receptions (15), yards (222), and receiving touchdowns (3). This FAU offense has really come together this season, leading C-USA, and Wester will be a key player down the stretch.

Victor Tucker, Charlotte (Cobbett)

Targets: 29

Team Target Share: 27%

Total Fantasy Points: 51

The 49ers upperclassman had a great game on Saturday accounting for 36% of the team’s receptions and hauling in two scores, producing 28.7 fantasy points. Tucker forms a great tandem with teammate Grant DuBose, who is also worth a look if he is available.

Tucker leads the team in receptions (19) and ranks second in touchdowns (2) behind DuBose. Tucker’s stock goes way up if quarterback Chris Reynolds returns next week against Georgia State.

JuanCarlos Santana, Tulsa (Laub)

Targets: 21

Team Target Share: 25%

Total Fantasy Points: 47.9

Last week Ryan recommended CFF diehards pick up QB Davis Brin, and I identified WR Keylon Stokes in the CFF Cheat Sheet’s column. After two weeks, the Golden Hurricane are the third-ranked passing team in the nation, averaging 391 yards per game and recording seven touchdown passes. While scrutinizing targets and leaders at Tulsa, JuanCarlos Santana stood out as a waiver wire gemstone with the number of targets, team target share, and production.

At 6’0” and 176-pounds, Santana has started the past two seasons and earned three-varsity letters at Tulsa. Before kickoff this year, he had registered 104 receptions for 1,466 yards and eight touchdowns. In 2022, the senior has logged 11 receptions for 189 yards, averaging 17.2 ypc. and scoring three times.

Over the upcoming next three weeks, the Golden Hurricanes host Jacksonville State this week before traveling to Mississippi and welcoming Cincinnati. I recommend acquiring and starting Santana versus the Gamecocks and taking a wait-and-see approach against the Rebels and Bearcats.

Honorable Mention Receivers

Total Fantasy Points: 34.2

WR Champ Flemings, Arkansas State

Targets: 17
