2019 NFL Draft: Washington Redskins Select Montez Sweat

With the 26th pick the Washington Redskins trade up for Edge Rusher Montez Sweat out of Mississippi State

Any other year, Montez Sweat is a top 15 player. This draft is so deep with talented edge rushers and Washington made the wise decision of trading up for Sweat. Add on Sweat to their steal of Dwayne Haskins and you’re looking at a real solid start for Washington’s 2019 Class.

For starters, Sweat killed it at the combine with a 4.41 40 time and a 36 inch vertical. Mississippi State’s defensive line was excellent last season and Sweat led the way with 12 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss, and 53 total tackles.

He has incredible upside in the 3-4 system and will make an excellent compliment to Ryan Kerrigan on the other side of the line. He’s fast and has long arms. He can create space and builds leverage with his hands. And the best thing about Montez Sweat is that he knows how to use every inch of that tremendous wingspan to make plays.

On the other hand, he isn’t the most fluid of players and can be choppy rushing upfield. Although he’s good with his hands, he needs to show more assertiveness when he uses them. He also has a high center of gravity given that he’s 6-foot-6 and that hinders his ability to move east-to-west.

Fantasy Impact of Montez Sweat

IDP Owners!!! Buy, buy, buy. Montez Sweat landed in the ideal system for his skill set, he’s the starter when he steps in the locker room,  and he’s opposite and already good end. The Redskins defensive front gets better with this addition and Sweat will age like a fine wine. He’s in an ideal scheme and nobody’s asking him to be the man in his first year.

The Redskins wouldn’t have traded up if they weren’t going to use him. Although he will need time to reach that full potential, expect some big plays from Sweat in his rookie season as Washington tries to win their part of the division.
