2019 NFL Draft: New York Giants Select Dexter Lawrence

With the 17th pick the New York Giants pick DT Dexter Lawrence out of Clemson

It’s hard to ignore the dumpster fire of a selection that New York made at six with Daniel Jones but a player Giant’s fans won’t boo this season is Big Dexter Lawrence out of Clemson. Lawrence entered into the 2016 recruiting class as the second biggest defensive lineman name behind Rashan Gary. But the 350-pound Defensive Tackle made a name for himself as one of the biggest run stuffers in college football.

With his 350-pound size, he’s nearly impossible to run on up the middle because he simply eats up all the available space. He was quick for a big man all 2018 when he was able to remain healthy. He’s so strong and large that he can break off of any single coverage when he feels like doing so and eats up double teams well enough to let linebackers do what they want.

Many people will point out his lack of numbers but when he’s competing with two other first-round selections as well as a day two selection for tackles it’s hard to hold that against him. He’s not about to set an edge or win using technique but his size makes him a challenge for even the best of guards.

Fantasy Impact of Dexter Lawrence

Another IDP mention here but it’s not for Big Dex. Lawrence is a space eater. You put him up the middle not because you think he will get double teamed, but because he is going to get double teamed. If I’m a smart fantasy player in an IDP league I’m gunning for BJ Goodson and Alec Ogletree who are about to eat opposing quarterbacks alive as they run unblocked into the backfield.

Lawrence will battle it out with Dalvin Tomlinson who the G-Men took in 2017. There’s also an opportunity on the Right side of the defensive line for him to win out over Jake Ceresna but he belongs at Nose Tackle.
