2019 NFL Draft: Atlanta Falcons Select Kaleb McGary

With the 31st pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons selected offensive tackle Kaleb McGary from Washington.

The Atlanta Falcons traded up to acquire the Los Angeles Rams’ first round selection. Once they had secured the draft slot, Atlanta made right tackle Kaleb McGary the penultimate pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Falcons finished fourth in the league in passing offense last year, but just 27th in rushing offense.

Fantasy Impact of Kaleb McGary

McGary has a solid NFL frame and a firm base. He stands at 6’7″ and weighed in at 317 pounds at the NFL combine. McGary possesses enough upper body strength to counter bull rushes from defenders. However, he has relatively short arms and tends to lunge when faced with a quick move. McGary’s quickest path towards consistent playing time in the NFL may be at guard. Because of his limitations, he may begin his career on the interior or in jumbo and short-yardage packages.

There are also concerns regarding McGary’s long-term health. He has been diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia issue. McGary has been cleared to participate in all football activities. But this seems like the type of ailment that could pop up at any time and prohibit McGary from reaching his full potential as an NFL prospect.

Without a clear path to a starting gig, it is difficult to envision McGary making much of an impact for fantasy purposes this season. He will probably be employed as a mere depth piece along the Falcons’ offensive line. Atlanta’s skill players should all remain solid plays, but it will not be because of any major contributions on McGary’s part.
