2019 NFL Draft: Los Angeles Chargers Select Jerry Tillery

With the 28th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers selected defensive tackle Jerry Tillery out of Notre Dame.

The Los Angeles Chargers made a very underrated move when they drafted Jerry Tillery. Tillery is an intriguing pro prospect. He began his football career as an offensive lineman and was a very good one. In fact, Tillery was among the highest-rated players at his old position in high school. It was not until his freshman year in college when he made the transition to the defensive side of the football. He has incredible size and strength, and should only improve as he continues to learn the nuances of playing defense.

Fantasy Impact of Jerry Tillery

Tillery needs to improve his footwork and technique if he wants to be an elite run-stopper at the next level. He tends to lose his balance more often than a player his size should. However, I would argue this is a byproduct of him learning on the job in real time. I believe he will continue to make adjustments as he gains valuable experience.

The Chargers D/ST unit finished 15th in total fantasy points last year. They were solid across the board in nearly every statistical category. They finished in the top-10 in both rushing yards and passing yards allowed. Los Angeles should only improve with the addition of Tillery. He should see plenty of single coverage as a part of a defensive line featuring Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. If Tillery can improve his technique and consistency, he can help the Chargers become a truly elite defense in both real life and fantasy leagues.
