2019 NFL Draft: Houston Texans Select Tytus Howard

With the 23rd pick the Houston Texans pick OT Tytus Howard out of Alabama State

Philadelphia really threw the Houston Texans off of their game. Houston needed a left tackle. Deshaun Watson needed a left tackle. Andre Dillard was swept out from under them and the Texans pulled out the name Tytus Howard a bit too early. Don’t get me wrong, Tytus Howard still fills a need for the Texans theoretically and gives them someone to play on the outside. But with Jawaan Taylor and Greedy Williams still on the board, they instead go for a player from a lower level of college football and trusts them with one of the most important spots in football.

Tytus Howard was a quarterback in high school and made the switch to O Lineman in college. He’s very fluid in pass sets and mirrors defenders like he’s defending a basketball player. He stood out to scouts when he virtually shut down Auburn’s pass rush in a blowout loss in Jordan Hare. And, most importantly, he has a high ceiling to work with given that he’s still newer to the position and hasn’t reached his full potential.

But is he ready for the NFL in year one? He’s not quite strong enough for NFL defensive ends and he doesn’t have the technique down to mask that like some of the other first-round tackles. He’s green. Very Green. He was projected as a day two draft pick and needs time if he’s going to make an impact for the Texans.

Fantasy Impact of Tytus Howard

Deshaun Watson really needs someone to cover that side because it seems as though he’s always on the run. If they can get someone on the left side to help Watson out he’s instantly a more accurate passer and he’s got he most important thing in football, time to make a play. If Howard can play as he did against Auburn all year long then Watson will finally have that help he needs. If not, then Watson’s got another long year ahead of him.
