🐺 Wolves Team Preview 🐺

Last Season

Wolves had an excellent debut season back in the Premier League in 2018/19 surpassing many expectations on route to seventh place in the Premier League.  The style of football was brave and attacking, whilst many of the Wolves players became household names in EPL draft.

The likes of Matt Doherty, Willy Boly, Raúl Jimènez, Jonny, and João Moutinho all scored above 300 Fantrax points last year; with Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves both playing excellent supporting roles having scored well into the 200 points mark.

Top Scoring 18/19 Players

    1. Matt Doherty: 518.5 points
    2. Raúl Jimènez: 410 points
    3. João Moutinho: 367 points

New Signings

Wolves have been very smart over this summer transfer window, spending a substantial amount of money on two very good players.  Both last seasons loanee’s Raúl Jimènez and Leander Dendoncker have joined Wolves on permanent deals.

Dendoncker joined half way through the season and in this time, he had an excellent impact last season.  In terms of Fantrax points, Dendoncker scored 139 points averaging a reasonable 7.3 points per game.  Whilst Dendoncker is never going to be a front runner in any draft, he is the type of play worth having in your squad as a sixth choice midfielder.  The reason being, Dendoncker will accrue points through alternate sources than the transitional goals and assists route for a midfielder.

The most critical piece of business in this window, perhaps of all Premier League sides, is that of the permanent deal for Jimènez.  So many Premier League teams are on the hunt for a centre forward that is reliable in front goal; Jimènez is that chap!  Last season Jimènez scored 13 goals and picked up seven assists; incredible statistics.

Two brand new players for Wolves have now arrived; Jesus Vellejo and Patrick Cutrone.  Vallejo has joined on loan from Real Madrid, and will provide competition in central defence.  We expect him to oust Ryan Bennett from the side.  Cutrone has joined from AC Milan.  He’s a talented striker, but for now he’ll play second fiddle to Jimenez and Jota.

Premier League Prospects

As we’ve already pointed out in our previous team previews; it is almost impossible to separate Watford, Everton, West Ham, Leicester, Wolves and Bournemouth.  For Wolves to pip there closest rivals for seventh place in the Premier League this year, much will rely on the defence capabilities of Boly and Doherty once again.  Whilst Jota and Jimènez will be critical to Wolves in the final third of the park.  Probably two of the more underrated players in the Premier League, Moutinho and Neves, will be key to making Wolves tick.  If these chaps can stay fit then Wolves will take some stopping.  What do you think reader, Champions League football?

Predicted League Position: 9th.

Predicted Watford Starting Eleven

Fantasy EPL Team Previews - Wolves

  • Given the success of last season, we can’t see any changes to the starting 11 that did so well last season
  • Vallejo will be pushing Bennett hard for a starting position
  • Cutrone is likely to be a back up player for now

Projected Top Scoring Players

⚽️ Raúl Jimènez ⚽️

Raúl Jimènez was one of the standout performers in Fantrax last season.  His 13 goals and seven assists helped Jimènez to 410 points; ranking Jimènez as the sixth best striker in Fantrax and the 20th highest player overall.  Last seasons heroics by Jimènez has propelled him to the forefront of many Fantrax managers draft strategies.  Admittedly, Jimènez is not going to be drafted before the likes of Kane or Salah; however Jimènez will most certainly be ranked in the top-10 forwards in many leagues.  We fully expect Jimènez to pick up from where he left off last season, and lead the line for Wolves.

🎯 João Moutinho 🎯

Possibly one of the most underrated players in the Premier League last season?  Moutinho was in sublime form last season, making Wolves tick, and generally being the creative influence in central midfield.  Despite only scoring one goal, Moutinho added eight assists to his attacking output tally; linking up with Jimènez and Jota.  Averaging a tremendous 9.66 points per game, Moutinho picks up points from Fantrax’s alternate multiple scoring options on his way to an overall tally of 367 points.  With Moutinho likely to be a central influence again for Wolves, we believe he is a solid third to fifth ranked midfield option for any Fantrax squad this season.

💎 Matt Doherty 💎

What a 2018/19 season for Doherty.  We love it when a player makes the step up from the Championship to the Premier League with flying colours; and boy did Doherty manage this last season.  Doherty is a Fantrax EPL legend!!  Last seasons highest scoring defender on Fantrax, Doherty was amazingly the third highest scoring player overall.  Having established himself as an elite level Fantrax player; we have rank Doherty as a first round defender pick for this seasons 2019/20 draft.  Capable of scoring goals, Doherty scored four goals last season, he is also as capable of turning provider having picked up five assists last season.  Wolves kept nine clean sheets last year, which all adds up to Doherty as an astute pick this season.

🎲 Honorable Mentions: Diogo Jota and Jonny 🎲

We really must give a shout out to second striker Diogo Jota.  Last season Jota was in fine form, scoring nine goals and picking up five assists in a total points haul of 290.5.  Jota would be a fair punt to break into Wolves top three scorers this season, particularly as he will be a guaranteed starter up front.  If Jimènez comes and goes; look to Jota for an excellent second to third ranked forward!  Jota scored one of the two goals in the Europa League qualifying round, and has also been in excellent goal scoring form in the pre-season Asia Cup.

Finally, keep an eye out for left wing-back Jonny.  The wing-back was very good last season, but didn’t quite hit the same level as Doherty.  Jonny has the potential to reach the levels of Doherty and with all the attention likely to be on the right wing-back; look to Jonny in your draft if you can’t get your hands on Doherty.
